International Women’s Day: Nigerian Women Urged To Strike Balance Between Home Front And Work

As Radio One FM Ladies Observe Day In Style

Nigerian women have been commended for working so hard in order to contribute to the upkeep of their families, while at the same saddled with the huge responsibility of making babies.

But in performing these roles, they should always endeavour to strike a balance between the home front and work so that none will affect the other.

Those were the remarks of the Director Lagos Operations, Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria, FRCN, Mrs. Bolanle Owoyemi at the celebration of this year’s International Women’s Day by Radio One FM, one of the three stations under Lagos Operations.

The event, which was the first of its kind by the FM station, was an opportunity for women of the organisation to showcase their achievements and also brainstorm on a number of issues affecting the women-folk, thereby making the work environment more conducive for them.

Mrs. Owoyemi who part of the celebration from start to finish alongside other members of Committee Of Management, noted that it was necessary to celebrate women because of the significant role they play in their respective families and the society at large.

Commending the efforts of women in working to assist their families, she however advised that in playing their roles, they should always ensure balance between their home fronts and work.

Mrs. Owoyemi who urged that the celebration should not be a one- off thing or Radio One affair, said the observation of International Women’s Day has to cut cut across all the three FM stations under Lagos Operations.

She explained that the occasion providing an opportunity for women to come together in love to share opinions that would enable them become more relavant as wives, leaders and nation builders.

Her words, “It is important to celebrate women because women play significant role in the society. It should not be a one-off thing. Not just a Radio One affair. It should be an affair that cuts across all the stations in Lagos Operations.

“As we bring ourselves together as women and work in love, we would be able to have a strong workforce and build our homes. We recently heard of women going to protest at National Assembly; women inclusion is very important and we cannot leave it behind

“My advice to working women in Nigeria is that there should be a balance, because raising children is important and working too to support the family is important. But you have to know where to draw the line. As you are raising the children and working, know that you must care for these children and as well not to allow the home to affect the work and not allow the work to affect the home,” she advised.

On his part, the General Manager, Radio One, Mr. Korede Ogunbunmi described women as wonderful and peculiar people whose contribution to the society is outstanding and should always be celebrated.

Mr. Ogunbunmi who expressed happiness that the maiden event was held during his tenure, pointed out that the station is sensitive to women issues and offers them platforms to succeed.

“There is a need to celebrate women. They are wonderful and peculiar people. They contribution of women in every organisation cannot be wished away and cannot be underestimated. Women have made a lot of contributions.

“Radio one is noted for giving women platform and voice. We highlight women issues, we check their achievements. We encourage them to bring their potential to help the society and Nigeria. You can see that women occupy top positions in Nigeria. There are so many women doing well for the country. We have no choice than at least highlight these achievements and when they have challenges we help to find solutions”.

In a lecture on stress and other health Issues, the Chief Matron of FRCN, Lagos Operations, Mrs. Gloria Istifanus advised women to regularly go for medical checkup to ascertain their health status.

The intiator of the program, Mrs. Florence Ubajekwe explained that she was motivated out of the necessity for women to celebrate themselves, having achieved alot in the course of performing their duties.

The theme for this year’s International Women’s Day is “Gender Equality today for a sustainable tomorrow”.
