Residents Lament Suffering, Saying Contractor Damaged Road Further Before Eloping
Residents of Isu Community in Arochukwu Local Government Area, Abia State, have cried out to the Federal Government, relevant government agencies and their representatives in government, particularly Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, to come to their aid by ensuring that the contractor handling the Orira-Ikot Okpura-Arochukwu road project, who had disappeared into thin air shortly after the flag-off of the project, returns to site.
The road construction which is a Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) project, was reportedly facilitated by the Senator representing Abia-North, Chief Orji Uzor Kalu, and contracted to Messers Wommy Multiconcept Ltd, now at large.
Its flag-off on the 17th of March, 2021 was greeted by wild jubilation, as Isu residents celebrated the eventual intervention of the authorities in the highly important and strategic road, that for decades remained a major source of worry to them given its deplorable state.
But more than a year after the flag-off, residents said their problems have been compounded as the contractor had further damaged the road before eloping.
The residents who have taken to the various social media platforms in their search for help, said they had gone to the extent of sending emissaries to the contractor, only for them to return with the disturbing news that there was no such company at the address given.
A prominent indigene of the Community, Mr. Chukwuemeka Sunday Kalu while making his complaint described the development as “another contract scam”.
According to him, “The contract awarded to Messers Wommy Multiconcept Ltd by NDDC for the construction of a 2.5km portion of the road from Ubila to Isu in Arochukwu LGA, Abia, bought joy initially but after damaging the road beyond the initial state, the contractor disappeared for almost 2years now.
“Surprisingly, other contracts that were awarded after on that portion to other contractors on the same road had been completed.
“Isu community sent emissaries to the office of the contractor as written on the signpost but surprisingly there was nothing like the contractor there” Kalu said.
In other social media posts, dozens of Isu indigenes appealed that those that used Messerrs Wommy Multiconcept Ltd to attract the contract be apprehended and compelled to execute the project or return the funds meant for it.
They also appealed for the intervention of EFCC; Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Senator Godswill Akpabio; NDDC; Federal Ministry of Works and Housing; Former President Goodluck Jonathan’s aid, Reno Omokri and Sahara reporters among others.
According to them ,the speedy completion of the project will be of immense help to them as it will ease the perennial setback they face in transporting their agric produce, in addition to enabling movement in and out of the community.
Mr. Okoro Daniel Amaechi, another Isu resident wrote on facebook, ” I wish senator Orji Uzor Kalu who attracted the work will live up to his duty and ensure that the money for the work is not stolen”.
Efforts by our reporter to contact a representative of Messers Wommy Multiconcept Ltd, one Mazi Johning Nwankwo yielded no result as his mobile line (08053265352) has been switched-off. Messages to him via WhatsApp were equally not delivered since the line has not been active.
