WAEC Increases Stipends Of Supervisors

As body is advised to engage people of integrity as supervisors and invigilators

The West African Examinations Council, WAEC, has been advised to always engage the services of Supervisors and Invigilators that are of high moral standard and integrity in the conduct of its examinations.

This is to ensure that WAEC examinations are not conpromised by some bad eggs.

This was the submission of Prof. Ngozi Osarenren of the Department of Educational Foundations, University of Lagos while delivering the 27th West African Examinations Council, WAEC, Endowment Fund Lecture in Abuja.

She said that it had been observed that bad eggs among examination Supervisors and Invigilators usually
aide and abeit examination Malpractices during the conduct of Senior School Candidates Examinations.

She also.explained that due to poor renumeration, some teachers that served as Markers of examination scripts approached the assignment perfunctorily or engaged in some sharp practices in the course of marking scripts.

Prof. Osarenren who blamed students’ poor performance partly on poor quality of some teachers and their style of teaching suggested that teachers should be well trained on how to impact knowlege in students and not just teaching them therories.

Prof. Osarenren who was once a Commissioner for Education, Edo State stated that there were cases whereby teachers deliberately refused to teach some topics under a parricular subject stated in the WAEC syllabus becasue they lacked the capacity to teach such subject or topic.

In the same vein, the Lecturer pointed out some issues that had posed serious challenge to the nation’s education sector in recent times.

She said that the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic and the state of insecurity in the county in particular, had posed serious challenge to schooling in the country.

She stresssed that while the COVID-19 pandemic had disrupted the normal schooling pattern in the country, some students and their teachers were afraid to go back to the classroom in some part of the country due to spate of kidnapping in the society.

In a contribution, the Chairman to Council, WAEC, Prof. Ato Essuman gave the assurance that WAEC would continue to maintain the integrity of its examinations across the five member countries by ensuring that bad eggs would not be given a space in its operations.

Giving the vote of thanks at the event, the Head of National Office of WAEC in Nigeria, Mr. Patrick Areghan announced that WAEC had concluded plans to increase Supervisors and Invigilators stipends beginning from the conduct of the 2022 May/June Senior School Certificate Examinations.
